David Komline is writing a dissertation titled “The Common School Awakening: Education, Religion, and Reform in Transatlantic Perspective, 1800-1848.” In it he argues that transatlantic conversations and religious motivations helped define a movement for state-sponsored schools that stretched from Germany, through France and Britain, to America.  By analyzing the journals, correspondence, and written reports of reformers who traveled to Prussia in the 1830s he demonstrates how shifting representations of education in Germany influenced the centralized school system Americans live with today.
